SMALL-TOWN GIRLS, MIDNIGHT TRAINS

Luckily, I didn’t fall off the boat into the water but it was still pretty embarrassing. Not to mention pretty scary for a couple of hours there when the side of my calf hurt with every little movement and I wondered how in heck I was going to get through two weeks in Europe with a bum leg.

The backstory: we booked Hong Kong Airport Express tickets through Klook (they’re cheaper there) and a few days later we received an email stating we could avail of a free tour. There were two tour choices and I decided on the one that included a free Dukling Harbour cruise. The cruise was going to be on a traditional Chinese junk and it was timed to sail at sunset so I thought it would be really cool.

And it was cool.

Obviously, it isn’t their fault I’m clumsy and not quite tops at decision making.

After an interesting walking tour through the older parts of Central, we boarded the restored fishing boat and looked for a place to settle down. The good seats at midlevel had been taken so my parents settled on one of the interior benches. H and I went up to the topmost level where we found a spot on the floor from where we could feel the breeze and look out to the sea.

“Oh, I love this, Nanay!” H exclaimed.

Which was all very well until he decided, a few minutes later, when the boat was already moving at cruising speed, that he “missed Mamu and Papu” and urged me to go back downstairs.

Now, the stairs connecting the middle and top levels didn’t have a railing — perfectly fine for climbing up or down when the boat wasn’t moving. But it was moving by the time we went down, and while the people at midlevel kindly reached out to keep H steady, they understandably didn’t see the need to offer the same assistance to a grown person like me. And so something like this literally happened:

Having said all that, we had a great time at the tour, first walking around the older parts of Central…

…and then going on the harbour cruise in a traditional Chinese boat. I even recovered the next day, thanks to a potent combination of prayer, Celebrex, and good old SalonPas. 😀

I’m not sure if and till when the free tours will be available — Klook just said “Offers end on 15 June 2018” — but you can book similar tours here:
