If I’d hoped to escape Valentines by fleeing to Italy, I could hardly have done worse than going up to Rome’s Giardino degli Aranci (Orange Garden) at sunset.

The Orange Garden (also referred to as Parco Savello) is located on the Aventine Hill, overlooking the Tiber and the magnificent Roman skyline across the river. Its name comes from the bitter orange trees that populate each side of the central pathway from the garden’s entrance to the terrace.

It’s rather small — enclosed in part by the remains of the walls of an ancient fortress — but is apparently quite popular, especially at sunset, especially among couples, especially at Valentine’s. And, really, who can blame them?
