Travel insurance for European trips

Travel insurance is one of the requirements for getting a Schengen visa and I’m often asked about it. I’ve fortunately never had reason to use the insurance so I can’t speak to ease of filing claims, and I also can’t compare the different Schengen-approved insurance companies, but just in terms of how easy it is to buy a policy, I would recommend Blue Cross.

Here’s how to get Blue Cross travel insurance

  1. Go to the Blue Cross website. Click the BUY NOW button.

  2. Fill in the necessary information about your trip. At the bottom of this page, you can choose among the available plans and payment currency options. (See sample prices for various itineraries HERE.)

  3. Wait a short while for your information to be validated.

  4. Enter your personal information.

  5. You will then be taken to a payment page where you can pay for your policy by credit card. Shortly after payment, you will receive your insurance documents via email. Print the Official Confirmation of Coverage (OCC) and Travel Insurance Contract (TACTIC) for your Schengen visa application and/or when you go on your trip.

Schedule of Benefits

Here’s a bit more detail regarding the benefits under the various Blue Cross plans. (For our Schengen visa application, we got the Prestige Euro Plan.) See sample prices for various itineraries HERE.
