In Rome, you see these letters everywhere: in manhole covers, ancient monuments, and everything in between. SPQR stands for “Senātus Populusque Rōmānus” — the Senate and People of Rome. It calls to my mind that other famous phrase: “of the people, by the people, for the people.” I love the sense of community and collectivity behind these phrases — the sense that the government, the country, belongs to none of us and to all of us; that these things are for our own benefit but that we must do our part — and I hope the sentiments behind them live on.
